![]() ![]() More recently, some CAQDAS tries to assist with analytic procedures too. Such code and retrieve programs not only make it easy to select chunks of text (or even parts of images) and apply codes to them, but they also make it easy to retrieve all similarly coded text without decontextualization that is, without losing any information about where that text came from. CAQDAS has a range of tools for producing reports and summaries but the interpretation of these is down to you, the researcher.Ī key development was the introduction of software that could manage the coding and retrieval of texts combined with sophisticated searching. However, in much the same way as a word processor won’t write meaningful text for you, but makes the process of writing and editing a lot easier, using CAQDAS can make qualitative analysis easier, more accurate, more reliable and more transparent, but the program will never do the reading and thinking for you. It enables researchers to keep good records of their hunches, ideas, searches and analyses and gives access to data so it can be examined and analyzed. At root a CAQDAS program is a database, though it supports ways of handling data that go well beyond most databases. The software provides a powerful and structured way of managing all these aspects of analysis. Meeting such a requirement is an ideal job for a computer. In fact one could argue that the prerequisite of really effective qualitative analysis is efficient, consistent and systematic data management. It is clear from the preceding chapters that carrying out qualitative analysis requires careful and complex management of large amounts of texts, codes, memos, notes and so on.
