Tommy thought living in the capital would change things. The city that “never sleeps” is boring him to tears. It was boring there and he’s glad he got out, he just expected L’Manberg to be the city of dreams the papers always made it sound like. He liked living in his old town where everyone knew his name and he was the big fish. He is no master Librarian, political figure, or celebrity. Even in one of the biggest cities in the world, his day-to-day life is full of uneventful affairs and dreams of things he can’t even hope of being a part of. A flame does not ignite from his well of potential. He is fiery, loud, exciting and so is the city he’s living in, but despite that, the spark dies out. It’s disappointing how Tommy’s life is so bright yet somehow so polarizing dull, like the first few sparks coming off a flint. He’s changed so much yet is exactly the same Tommy he’s always been. His uniform was ironed before being given to him, meaning everything is creaseless and clean. His face is brighter, unsmudged with dirt and ash. Like, fuck, his old bedroom was a glorified shack shared with two dozen other children, it didn’t even have a mirror.Īnd here he is. Tommy looks like someone he would have made fun of a few months ago, “Oh those annoying college students, think they know the world all from a textbook.” It’s just a school uniform, but he looks like a stranger. His reflection stares back at him, just as surprised, dressed in a pale button-up, baggy blazer, and slacks. It shouldn’t unnerve him, it’s the same face he’s always had, the same run-of-the-mill dark hair and dark eyes. Tommy shocks himself when he glances in his bedroom mirror. What shall I say to the weeping child's eyes:įorget about me, for I am a captive bird? No breath or breeze remains for my flight. That I can not, dare not leave this prison.
